The Clean Water Program (CWP)

The CWP is a free program available to pregnant people who reside in the City of Milwaukee and have lead laterals that connect their home to the water main. Milwaukee has nearly 75,000 homes that have lead lateral connections, meaning that tens of thousands of people get their primary source of drinking water from poisonous lead pipes.

We are taking up this program because the City of Milwaukee and other non-governmental organizations that focus on lead, have failed to provide adequate health protections or any plan for the removal of Milwaukee’s lead laterals that takes less than 75 years. These failures have forced the Get the Lead Out Coalition to take action, pulling together a grassroots effort to alleviate the effects of lead poisoning on the most vulnerable.

The reason we are focusing on pregnant residents of Milwaukee is due to the fact that those most susceptible to the long-term health outcomes of lead poisoning are children, and particularly children in-utero. Lead contaminated water consumed by pregnant people can pass lead to their unborn child, causing health outcomes such as low birth weight, permanent brain, kidney, and nervous system damage, and learning and behavioral problems due to neurological damage. The CDC recommends that pregnant people do not consume water with any level of lead contamination.

In order to qualify for this program you must:
